The second born daughter to Bethany and John Speirs, both shifters from Bar Harbor, Maine. Growing up her toddler years were very privileged as both parents spoiled their daughters - though most of that was protection due to being Shifters. Despite the age difference between Astrid and her sister, they were best friends and nearly inseparable, except when it came to the attention of boys. From a very early age she had a certain enthusiasm for baking -- sure at first it was only mud pies, but as she got older she and her sister were truly able to help their mom in the kitchen. From middle school on it was like an addiction, community bake sales were serious competitions to Astrid.
Her parents never really sat the girls down and discussed their unique abilities with them until signs started showing around puberty. The subject was handled with the utmost care, and Astrid adjusted quite well. Her first ever shift was into a black cat -- a copy of the neighborhood stray she took care of. In reality the hardest thing about finding out she could shift was having to keep it a secret and not being able to tell her friends. Astrid thought it was cool, certainly her friends would have too, right? She never thought of being a Shifter as a burden or curse.
Allen Colt was her high school sweetheart and the first person she ever came out as a shifter to. Right after graduating high school Astrid got pregnant - and while it was very much an accident, there were no second thoughts about it. They got engaged and she took a year off before embarking on the college route, to have their son, Thomas Colt.
What had started out as a simple interest in baking, turned into a passion - one that lasted well through high school and sent her on her way to culinary school. Having a newborn was certainly difficult, with going through school and Allen going through training to be a police officer, but they survived it. A couple years later Astrid now had the schooling to call herself a real pastry chef -- plus a ring on her finger, as they finally got married after Tommy turned three. They were a happy family, despite not being rich and Astrid constantly worrying about Allen at work. Life was good, and peaceful -- that is, until Tommy was taken a few weeks after he turned ten.
When Tommy went missing they suspected a former disgruntled inmate that Allen had put away, and Astrid even considered another shifter possibly - but weeks of searching turned up nothing. Though local police had insisted the case had turned cold, Allen never gave up looking. It wasn't until vampires came out of the coffin to the world that they got an answer -- human remains of a young boy had been found at their next door neighbor's house - who was apparently a vampire. It was a shocking revelation, and left them feeling disgusted and blaming themselves as they believed their son had been so close the whole time. It was bittersweet closure as Astrid and Allen buried their son. The hole that was left was filled with anger, at least for Allen, and the two of them struggled to hold on to what they had left. Rebuilding their relationship to where Allen didn't blame himself, and Astrid could be strong enough for the both of them had taken years.
Once they were ready, they tried their luck at having a family again -- this time having twins; Ezra and Vala. Usually the first kid is when parents are overly cautious, but the second time around the Colt's weren't taking any chances. Not to mention, werewolves had been outted to the world and Astrid feared that shifters may be next - she didn't want her children to be in danger because of a gene they may or may not have. As they cherished every second of happiness that they were able to find again, Astrid was unaware that Allen had never stopped looking for their former neighbor who had supposedly murdered their son. Her husband had been an amazing officer, she really shouldn't have been surprised when he told her that he had tracked down the vampire, but Astrid couldn't help it when he insisted on going after him. And Allen did - making sure the vampire suffered for the pain he'd caused, but avenging Tommy's death had come at the cost of Allen's own life. Astrid had gotten the phone call from the police department early in the morning that her husband and best friend since high school, had died from injuries sustained during the fight.
For months following, Astrid withdrew from friends and family, for the most part staying quietly at home taking care of the twins the best she could alone. She had found happiness, twice, and both were taken from her. That didn't exactly leave her with a desire to get close to anyone -- in fact she became more protective of the twins. Between her and Allen, the two of them had had enough money set aside and Astrid decided a change of scenery was necessary -- leaving abruptly and quietly. Someplace humble, someplace warm -and far away from Maine. It led her to Seattle, Washington -- which was only slightly warmer, but it was also where her sister was living, who had offered to help take care of the toddlers. She's got friends from high school who live in Washington, but since relocating she hasn't made an effort to reach out to them at all - partly in fear that it would just end in more deaths. Astrid did however, reconnect with her older sister and opened up her own bakery; The Cupcake Corner. Getting it off the ground and moving cross-country was tough, but it was what they needed after having gone through such loss.
short lyric/quote here.
ABILITIES: Astrid has the ability to shapeshift at will. Her default shift is a black panther, formerly a short haired domestic cat. It was only after her son was born, and constant trips to the zoo, that she imprinted on the panther form.
During the full moon cycle she's compelled to shift like all Were species.
As a jaguar she's 172 lbs and 5ft 10 inches in length, plus a twenty-six inch tail. Despite the short and stocky limb structure of the jaguar, she’s highly adept at climbing, crawling and swimming -- Astrid's form is actually somewhat leaner and sleek. A jaguar's jaw is extremely powerful, having the strongest bite of all felids, and is capable of biting down with 2,000 pounds-force. It's twice the strength of a lion and the second strongest of all mammals after the spotted hyena, making turtle shells and bones easy to pierce. Jaguars are generally stalk-and-ambush when it comes to prey and prefer the unique method of biting directly through the temporal bones of the skull between the ears with its canine teeth, piercing the brain. This hunting method coupled with it's compact strength makes it an apex predator.
Over the years she's developed certain traits that have carried over to her human form -- impeccable balance and flexibility, advanced sense of smell and hearing, able to see better at night than the average human. Also she can climb you like a tree and bring you to the ground in a fight.
